First you call to book a same-day emergency assessment, usually 30 to 45 minutes. We use a 3D CBCT scan to map the tooth and nearby nerves. We numb the area with local anaesthetic so you feel no pain during the procedure. The removal itself takes about 45 to 60 minutes and involves a small gum incision to access and remove the tooth. The site may be closed with dissolvable stitches, and you will receive detailed aftercare instructions and any needed prescriptions before you go home.

The first 72 hours are critical for healing. Expect swelling and moderate discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen. Apply an ice pack to the cheek for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off to reduce swelling. Eat soft foods like soup, yogurt, and smoothies. Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours. Some light bleeding is normal; bite gently on the provided gauze to control it.

Complications are rare, but know what to watch for. Call our practice right away if you have severe increasing pain not helped by painkillers, ongoing bleeding that does not stop with pressure, a fever above 38 C, or a foul taste that suggests infection. In most emergency situations removing the tooth is the best long-term fix. Some alternatives exist. If the infection is severe we may start with antibiotics to calm the inflammation before scheduling the extraction later. This provides temporary relief but does not solve the underlying problem. For lower wisdom teeth with roots close to a major nerve we may consider a coronectomy to reduce nerve risk. We will discuss options based on your 3D scan.
