Then we may take a digital X-ray or use our 3D CBCT scanner to pinpoint the infection. For a gum abscess the immediate treatment involves draining the abscess under local anaesthetic to relieve pressure and pain, followed by a thorough cleaning of the area. We may prescribe antibiotics to control the infection and set a follow-up to address the underlying cause, which might be deep cleaning or further treatment. The aim is to reduce pain and manage the acute infection.

After emergency treatment for a gum infection or abscess, expect some tenderness. First 24 to 48 hours: Pain should fall after the abscess is drained, though some soreness remains. Use ibuprofen or other over-the-counter painkillers as directed. Eat soft foods and avoid hot, spicy, or hard items near the treated area. Rinse gently with warm salt water three to four times a day to keep the site clean and promote healing. Red flags during office hours: Monitor recovery.
